The Northern Territory Calisthenics Association (NTCA) was established in 1983 as the governing body for calisthenics in the Northern Territory. The Association oversees programs and supports local clubs in the encouragement, development, and promotion of calisthenics for participants of all ages and skill levels.
The word calisthenics comes from the Greek words kallos (beauty) and sthenos (strength). While these qualities are at the core of the sport, just as important are the social benefits, confidence building, and enhanced self-esteem that participants gain through their involvement.
Calisthenics is widely practiced in Australia and is recognised as a fun, engaging, and healthy way for children of all ages to stay active. It is a uniquely Australian sport that combines mental and physical discipline, teamwork, a competitive spirit, and a strong sense of responsibility.
Calisthenics blends elements of gymnastics, ballet, folk dance, jazz ballet, apparatus work (using clubs and rods), figure marching, mime, and singing. The NTCA hosts both team competitions and individual events, including Solo, Graceful Solo, and Duo performances.
